    Ayr Kite Fest 2004

    Anyone else heading up there??

Will it be worth the 6-hour trek?!

I know it's held inland, but how far is the beach cuz I been promised some kitesurfing coaching whilst I'm up there... and I proper cannae wait!

Also, while I'm on, if I were to be planning a 7-day road trip up the West Coast of Scotland at the end of August (Bank Holiday weekend onwards), where should I be planning to head to?? Will need beaches that I can landboard on as well as buggy so please don't suggest soft sand areas!

Come on, don't be precious with your fantastic beaches - pm me if you don't wanna make them public knowledge!

And finally, what time of year can the Northern Lights be seen, and from where? Would be SOOOOO kewl if I can tie in a viewing with the trip!

    Cheers people.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand - strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOO HOO - What a Ride!"

F*ck the fighting, let's go kiting.

Have a look at www.spka.co.uk for locations in Scotland, Ayr beach is quite small apparently, the low green (where the fest is held) is good in anything with a touch of west in it, otherwise its supposedly as gusty as you can get.

    Hope that helps,

OK, so according to the site, there are only 3 flying sites on the whole of the West Coast.... now I KNOW that's not right! I've seen the Harris thread so there's GOT to be places to fly on some of the islands.

    I wanna know which ones

Thanks for your info Kev, we'll just have to pray for something with West in then eh?!

I cant say I've seen the Harris thread, and anyway its not really the West Coast, its the Western Isles...

Macrihanish is also an option, there are some excellent beaches further north but access is a lot of hours on some very unfriendly roads. Tiree might be a good bet, good beaches all the way around so its always an onshore...

Yip, tiree is perfect for kiting, 2.5 miles of hard sand and the whole beach to yourself

Thats sort of because in a way most of the west coast is an excelent flying site. Only a choice few locations are mentioned. Its more a case of it would probably be easier to pick out the few spots that may not be very good.

One of the best things about that part of the world is that you can more or less go there and choose your spot at will. Its best to go there with a bit of spirit of exploration/adventure because there are not that many places close at hand that are still like that. Take advantage of that situation while you still can.
