yeah crazy thing wind is oh and this vid also, on the best days i get like 20ft out of my 4.9 and had a few freaky jumps on my 9m being more sensitive thermals the thing just feels relentless i have been up 40ft (with the 9) in about 15mph wind and a touch gusty and that was crazy enough i wanted to get down, i thought i was gonna die or get seriously injured all you can do in this situation is fly the kite and hold on tight and hope the ride ends safely. but nothing that's even close to this vid..

    Flexifoil Sabre2, 7m (Rasta)
and packed into one giant ozone bag...

    This stuff definutely does happen.
Happened to me about 8-10yrs ago. Flying at pendine, did a smal jump of only 4-6ft and then shot up to about 50!

Thermal passed/stopped and my wipika airblast fell out of the sky as did i!

Resulted in a broken pelvis and a wierd thing where your muscles are soo badly damaged your own body destroys them and starts again....

These days kites are more stable, and safety systems are better but it's always a threat....

wind that particular day was just about 10mph.... hope it doesnt happen to anyone else as ruined me for a good year or so...

I had similar last year. Around 10 mph wind, barely getting me across the field and suddenly the kite went above my head and took me up about 30ft in a thermal.
The thing is with a thermal, the column of hot air rising is replaced with a column of cold air surrounding the thermal that falls at the same rate the hot air rises. This is called 'The dump'.
When you come out of the thermal and hit the dump, the speed you drop is quite frightening. I came down pretty hard as a result. Bottomed my board on landing, knees took all they could as well, then on to my arse and back, which then forced my head back into the ground. I had concussion for a good 24hrs afterwards. Luckily that was all I had.
As you say, these things do happen and there is little you can do to stop it when it does. All I can suggest to people is to stay calm and think about the landing. I had what seemed like, all the time in the world to plan my landing. It was like being in slow motion going up and surprised me just what went through my head. I can still remember it all quite clearly.
Don't let the fear of falling keep you from knowing the joy of flight!
